Bulgarian high jumper Stefka Kostadinova cleared a world record 2.09m. A magnificent double triumph in the Italian capital came from the USA’s Jackie Joyner-Kersee, who won the heptathlon by almost 600 points with 7136 and then the long jump with 7.36m.
East Germany’s Silke Gladisch was another athlete to take a brace of individual gold medals. She sped to a 100m and 200m double of 10.90 and 21.74.
Kenya’s Billy Konchellah won the first of his two 800m world titles in 1:43.06 while Italian victories which stirred the home crowd came curtesy of Francesco Panetta in the 3000m steeplechase and Maurizo Damilano in the 20km race walk.
