Great Britain’s Jonathan Edwards bounded out to a triple jump world record of 18.16m with his opening jump and then, scarcely believably, improved 18.29m with his next effort.

For the second successive World Athletics Championships, the world record fell in the women’s 400m hurdles as USA’s Kim Batten won in 52.61. Her compatriot Michael Johnson set championship records when winning the 200m and 400m in 19.79 and 43.39 respectively.

There were a plethora of three-time champions: Moses Kiptanui front-ran his way to a third 3000m steeplechase gold in 8:04.16, Algeria’s Noureddine Morceli won his third 1500m crown and Germany’s Lars Riedel launched the discus out to 68.76m to complete a hat trick of victories. USA’s Dan O’Brien added a third decathlon gold to the titles he had won in Tokyo and Stuttgart with a tally of 8695.
