British hurdlers were in world-record form with Colin Jackson flying to a 110m hurdles victory in 12.91 and his compatriot Sally Gunnell adding to her 1992 Olympic title and taking the 400m hurdles honours in 52.74.

Michael Johnson won the 400m in 43.65 and the American turned on the power again on the anchor leg in the 4x400m as the USA quartet ran a world record 2:54.29.

Among the superlatives in Stuttgart, Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor cleared 2.40m in the high jump and Ukraine’s Sergey Bubka went over 6.00m in the pole vault, both marks championship records. This was also first time that the women’s triple jump was contested with Russia’s Anna Biryukova winning with a world record 15.09m.
